Hospitality Before Execution

                              24 x 36

Gouache, pen, pencil, and ink on canvas

Jael brings a blanket to cover the exhausted captain.

Jael quietly brings a blanket to cover the exhausted captain.

Jael quickly dispenses any indication of shock or suspicion, and adopts an attitude of gracious hospitality. She urges Sisera to quickly come into her tent to avoid capture. He requests water, but she generously opens a bottle of milk for him. She even serves him up butter in one of her fanciest dishes.

WHY DAIRY FOODS?

You may be familiar with melatonin as a sleep aid. Well, trytophan is the amino acid and raw material from which our bodies produce melatonin.  And dairy products are

a rich source of trytophan. Modern science has merely rediscovered what many ancient cultures knew as common knowledge.

 WHEN CIRCUMSTANCES
DEMAND DECISIVE ACTION

  • Sisera has given Jael an order. But he doesn't have that kind of authority over her. He's not her husband.

  • Heber returning to find a warlord asleep in their home would not be good.

  • And if the armies of Israel arrive, and Sisera awakes before they can take him, he could potentially take her hostage in a desperate bid to escape.

THE LAST ORDER HE WILL EVER GIVE

Sisera orders Jael to stand by the door of the tent and watch, and if any man arrives and asks if any man is there, to tell them, "no".
